Affinity U aims to support and empower undergraduate and graduate students of the global majority in Communication Sciences and Disorders programs by providing a safe space for advocacy, resources, and peer support to address and overcome challenges related to inequities, attrition, and underrepresentation in the profession.

Our mission is to create a supportive and empowering community for undergraduate and graduate students of the global majority in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) programs. Recognizing the unique challenges and inequities faced by these students, our group is dedicated to advocating for their academic and personal success. Through the provision of resources, peer support, and professional guidance, we aim to address issues of attrition and underrepresentation in the CSD field. Our goal is to foster an inclusive environment where every student can thrive and contribute to the diversity and excellence of CSD professions.

Our group was established to provide a supportive space where students can share experiences, access resources, and receive the advocacy they need to succeed academically and personally.
Recognizing the unique challenges and inequities faced by students of color in CSD programs, we are committed to addressing issues of attrition and underrepresentation in the field. PRESENTER BIO:
Dr. Latimer-Hearn holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Leadership for Changing Populations and has served as a multilingual speech-language pathologist and educational consultant in the US and abroad since 2002. She is a recipient of the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship Award. Her internationally recognized research focuses on AAE, cultural-linguistic diversity, and race and class issues in education. This course, using a Critical Race Theory framework, supports speech pathologists in identifying key features of African American English dialect across linguistic domains. The course explores methods for effective assessment & support for AAE-speaking students with and without identified disorders. Participants will learn to effectively advocate for AAE speakers and to promote awareness and understanding among educational stakeholders. 0.2 ASHA CEUs
This course supports speech-language pathologists and educators in promoting equitable assessment, treatment (where appropriate), and instruction for AAE-speaking students. Participants examine strategies to improve assessment and identification of appropriate therapeutic targets. 0.15 ASHA CEUs
Culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogy are vital to effective service delivery. This course examines Black culture and identity and supports clinicians of diverse backgrounds in incorporating this rich content into therapy. Participants explore the significance of events such as Black History Month and Juneteenth as they relate to the Black experience in contemporary society. Participants will learn to effectively and respectfully incorporate content into therapy. 0.15 ASHA CEUs
In this course participants will examine the practice of cultural policing in school settings and its relationship to involvement in the school-to-confinement pipeline. Participants explore factors placing students at risk for involvement in remedial and punitive programs. Finally, participants explore strategies to improve student self-advocacy and equip educational stakeholders with strategies to disrupt the school-to-confinement pipeline. 0.15 ASHA CEUs
Participants will define and explore cultural-linguistic policing in schools. Participants will discuss potential impact of racism and cultural-linguistic policing on academic performance and student mental health. Finally, participants will outline culturally sustaining pedagogies that can be incorporated into instruction and intervention. 0.15 ASHA CEUs
This course surveys culturally relevant teaching and culturally sustaining pedagogies. School-based speech-language pathologists explore methods for incorporating these practices into service delivery to promote more equitable outcomes for global majority students. 0.15 ASHA CEUs
